And Still, She Grows Flower in Her Flesh: New work by Alexandria Smith & Katherine Toukhy

On View: 07/17 – 08/07
Opening Reception: Sun. 07/17 from 4:30 – 7PM

Like Nayyirah Waheed, whose poem “A Genocide for Flowers” inspired the title for this exhibition, Alexandria Smith’s and Katherine Toukhy’s respective work responds to notions of multiple and developing identities.

Seemingly light-hearted with its bold colors and cartoonish aesthetics, Alexandria Smith’s paintings rely on the repetitive but fragmented representation of ribbons, shoes, pigtails and dresses to convey an uneasy feeling of almost playful games, set in liminal spaces that allude to domestic and urban environments.

Katherine Toukhy’s wall works are densely layered, hand-drawn collages that compose small and large-scale figures. These characters are built with Islamic and camouflage patterns, orientalist imagery, and evocative landscapes, as if they were growing out of their layered histories and herstories.

On July 31th in a secret outdoor Brooklyn location, the inaugural SWINGSET party is set to go down with Paul Kalkbrenner, Jimmy Edgar, and Arman Naféei – all bringing their deep, tech sound to Brooklyn for a full day of sun-lit decadence.

SWINGSET is live techno legend Kalkbrenner’s first show back in NYC after a string of sold out US shows last year, and he will be joined by US underground hero Jimmy Edgar. Andre Naféei is rounding out this round of announces, guaranteeing a day of thoughtfully-curated dancefoor gems.

With a strong emphasis on day party production and aesthetic, SWINGSET will be a unique soiree of summer hedonism, and is exactly what you’ll need to blow off some of that sweltering summer steam, and find a slice of adventure this summer.

This is a very special endeavor for us – from our hearts to yours. We can’t wait for you to see what we have in store! Pre-sale have already sold out so grab yours while ya can.
